Muncie, INJust two weeks remain for Delaware County students to enroll in a state program that can help them pay for college. And help is available to get enrolled.

Project Leadership works each year to enroll Delaware County students into the state of Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars program. The Scholars program started in 1990 and is an early- college promise program designed to help ensure that every Indiana student can afford the opportunity provided by a college education. Eligible students who maintain the Scholar Pledge to Excellence in school and life receive a scholarship for up to four years of up to 100% tuition at an eligible Indiana college or university after they graduate from high school.

Project Leadership partners with Delaware County school corporations to enroll eligible 7th and 8th-grade students into the program through visiting schools, educating eligible students, and assisting them in starting applications to take home to parents for completion. All applications are due to the state each year by June 30th. This date is particularly important for 8th graders as it is the last chance to become a Scholar.

As of early June, 68% of eligible 8th graders and 36% of eligible 7th graders are enrolled as Scholars in Delaware County. This means that 168 8th graders and 310 7th graders are missing out on a chance at college tuition assistance.

At in-state, public two-year and four-year colleges, the 21st Century Scholarship covers up to 100 percent of tuition and some regularly assessed fees, such as technology, student-activity and health-services fees. The scholarship pays part of the tuition at private or independent colleges and approved for-profit specialty or proprietary schools.
