MUNCIE, IN – On Saturday, August 24th, Tuhey Park will be the setting for a special community event of healing and celebration. The Mary’s Miles / RCM 5k fun run, scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, is not just a race but a community gathering in support of a vital local cause.
Recovery Café Muncie (RCM) is a nonprofit organization in downtown Muncie that is making a huge impact on the lives of our most vulnerable community members. RCM welcomes anyone who is in recovery from anything – whether mental illness, substance use, homelessness, grief, hunger, or trauma – whatever it is that is keeping our neighbors from thriving. RCM welcomes them in with a smile, offers a cup of coffee, a hot meal, free clothing closet and food pantry.
Once a new guest feels safe, they have a wide variety of recovery activities to participate in. Members participate in peer recovery circles, educational classes, one-on-one recovery coaching, onsite service providers, creative expression, healthy hobby exploration, and many fun events. RCM offers a safe place for people to find and support each other and have fun together while they navigate the journey of recovery —and it’s all at no cost.
To support this vital space, a local group called Mary’s Miles has teamed up with RCM to host its very first 5k fun run event. Mary’s Miles was created in honor of the late Mary Phillips Maxwell. Mary was a talented artist and musician, remembered for her big smile and contagious laugh. Mary’s battle with chronic pain and opioids ended tragically, but her beloved daughter, Erin, is teaming up with Recovery Cafe Muncie to use Mary’s legacy to aid others.
Not only will this 5k event help raise awareness of the recovery resources available in Muncie, all proceeds from this 5k event will go to Recovery Café Muncie. Funds raised will support essential no-cost, no-barrier recovery programs that guide struggling individuals towards a life of recovery.
The success of this event relies on community participation. Whether you’re running, walking, or cheering, your presence will make a difference. Register to take part in the fun and consider donating to support RCM’s mission of providing a safe and supportive environment for recovery. Come join us at Tuhey Park for a morning of meaningful action. Let’s run together for recovery.
