MUNCIE, IN —Heart of Indiana United Way, in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College and with support from the Shafer Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of Road to Reading—a new summer literacy initiative that brings books and learning directly to families in the community.
Launching on May 29 at the Avondale Church/Ross Community Center, Road to Reading offers families the opportunity to “shop” together for free books and literacy resources from a fully stocked Ivy Tech RV. The RV will make stops at four community events throughout the summer in Muncie Promise Neighborhoods, creating joyful, engaging opportunities for families to build literacy-rich memories together.
- May 29: Avondale Church – End of School Year Celebration starting at 4 pm
- June 14: Juneteenth Celebration – McCulloch Park from 2 – 9 pm
- July 12: Connection Corner Birthday Bash – from 12 – 2 pm
- July 21: Industry Neighborhood Cookout – from 6 – 8:30 pm
“Road to Reading is more than a mobile book giveaway—it’s a way for families to come together around reading and learning,” said Jenni Marsh, President & CEO of Heart of Indiana United Way. “By meeting families where they are and making literacy resources fun and accessible, we’re helping children stay on track while school is out—and strengthening connections that support success year-round.”
Each Road to Reading event is intentionally held in a Promise Neighborhood, areas where children face some of the greatest barriers to educational success. Through this initiative, families will have access not only to high-quality children’s books, but also adult reading materials and community resources provided by partners from the Cradle to Career Network, Muncie Community Schools, and other out-of-school-time programs.
“The Road to Reading initiative is a powerful example of how we can come together as a community to support literacy, learning, and opportunity for all. Ivy Tech Muncie is honored to be part of this effort to spark a love of reading and building brighter futures for families right here in Muncie,” says Ivy Tech Chancellor Jeffrey Scott.
Families will be encouraged to browse the collection together, select books that interest them, and talk with community partners about ways to support their children’s learning at home. The program builds on the success of Heart of Indiana United Way’s long-running Summer Book Giveaway, expanding its reach and impact.
