MUNCIE, IN— Ball State University and Ball State Athletics have announced an agreement with First Serve Sports Management to operate the north Muncie indoor recreational facility formerly operated as the Northwest YMCA. The venue was sold last October and purchased by the University in order to retain the home of Ball State’s men’s and women’s tennis teams.

The University and athletics department have entered into a third-party agreement with First Serve to manage the facility, in what is intended to become a fully renovated racquet sports facility that will serve not just Ball State but the Muncie community.

“This was a strategic move not only to strengthen our tennis programs, but also to provide meaningful recreational opportunities for the Muncie community,” said Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. “By upgrading this facility and partnering with First Serve Sports Management to emphasize tennis and pickleball, we’re enhancing our teams and creating space for a vibrant segment of our community to grow alongside us.”

Longtime Muncie resident Jini Morgan, a tennis coach herself and a longtime supporter of Ball State tennis, also has experience in venue operations. She established First Serve Sports Management with the game’s growth in mind.

Her goal is to fill the stands at the facility’s competition venue and invite the tennis community to be a part of Ball State tennis. She’s also focused on adding programming that engages the community and promotes the University.

“We hope to create a tennis and racquet facility that can lift Ball State tennis programs and elevate tennis in our community,” she added.

Six primary initiatives are planned as the facility undergoes a facelift that began in mid-August:

                – Two new courts will be added in place of existing basketball courts.

                – A new lighting system is planned to include a lining system that reflects and diffuses light to minimize shadows and create a brighter space. It is a state-of-the-art system that is used by tennis facilities nationally, including most power conference facilities at the Division I level.

                – All eight courts will be re-surfaced.

                – Four pickleball courts will be added in the adjacent building to the east of the main facility.

                – A pro shop and lounge will replace the existing daycare area.

                – Locker rooms and restrooms will be upgraded.

                – Similar upgrades will take place to re-shape and re-brand the entry and reception areas.

Ball State University took ownership of the building on July 3, and First Serve Sports Management opened the facility for new business on August 18. First Serve has partnered with the U.S. Tennis Association for a $190,000 grant to help grow the infrastructure of tennis. The facility will also provide a competition venue for local schools and clubs.

Added Morgan: “Previously, Ball State used this facility only select months out of the year. I want those players here to train and engage, and give this place a higher profile. I want to grow our tennis community.”

Local tennis or pickleball players with interests in using the new facility may call 765-216-1915 for information or memberships. A grand opening is planned for mid-November following facility improvements.
