MUNCIE, IN—Each November, the Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, encourages millions of people across the country to take the first step toward a tobacco-free life. This year’s observance on November 20,  is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late—or too early—to quit smoking, vaping, or using smokeless tobacco.

Quitting is not easy, but it’s one of the best decisions a person can make for their health. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, linked to heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and multiple cancers. Yet, within 20 minutes of quitting, your heart rate begins to drop. After a few weeks, your lung function improves, and over time, your risk of heart attack and cancer begins to decline. Every smoke-free day is a victory worth celebrating.

The Great American Smokeout isn’t just about quitting for one day—it’s about making a plan that sticks. Here are a few steps to get started:

  1. Set a quit date and tell someone you trust for accountability.
  2. Identify your triggers—like stress, driving, or social situations—and plan healthy ways to handle them.
  3. Seek support. Free resources like 1-800-QUIT-NOW offer coaching, quit plans, and nicotine replacement therapies to make the process easier.
  4. Stay positive. Slip-ups happen—what matters is getting back on track and continuing forward.

If you use cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or chewing tobacco, this is your sign to make a change. Your body begins to heal the moment you quit, and your loved ones benefit too.

This November, let’s all take part in the Great American Smokeout by supporting friends, family, and coworkers who are ready to quit. One decision, one day, one step at a time—that’s how change begins.
