MUNCIE, IN Indiana University Health is now the only health system in Indiana offering an advanced robotic-assisted option for shoulder replacement procedures. This technology gives surgeons the ability to plan each surgery in greater detail and perform it with enhanced control, resulting in care shaped around the patient’s specific anatomy.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jacob Triplet is currently the only surgeon in the state performing this type of robotic-assisted shoulder procedure, expanding access to innovative surgical options for patients in Muncie and surrounding communities.

The technology supports surgeons by streamlining the most complex steps of the operation, guiding implant placement, and promoting more consistent results from patient to patient. Greater precision in the operating room can support a smoother recovery, improved comfort, and stronger long-term function.

“We are committed to bringing leading surgical options to the communities we serve,” says Jeff Hanson, service line administrator of orthopedics, rehab and neurosciences. “Robotic-assisted technology gives our team an added level of precision and control. It’s another way we are working to improve the patient experience and deliver high-quality care close to home.”

Before surgery, the system uses a 3D CT scan to help the care team develop a comprehensive plan tailored to the patient’s needs. During the procedure, it provides real-time data that guides the surgeon’s movements and supports accuracy while preserving clinical judgment.

“We’re proud to be the only provider in Indiana offering this level of advanced shoulder care,” says Dr. Triplet. “Our goal is always to deliver safe, high-quality treatment, and this technology allows us to do that in a way that is truly individualized for each patient.”

This first surgery in Indiana represents a major milestone and signifies that shoulder replacement is entering a new era of surgical planning, precision, and personalization. For many patients, especially those with complex shoulder conditions, robotic-assisted surgery promises hope of better outcomes than ever before.
