MUNCIE, IN — The Muncie-Delaware County Coalition of Women is seeking nominations of local women to honor during the annual Women’s Equality Day Program.

The coalition invites nominations of women who have made a significant contribution in the arts, education, religion, business, politics, environment, and social or community service by improving the quality of life in Delaware County. Other categories also will be considered.

Nominees must live and work in Delaware County.

A letter of nomination of 250 words or fewer describing the nominee’s contributions should be submitted by July 8 to: womensequalitydaymuncie@gmail.com or by mail to ATTN: Women’s Equality Day/YWCA Central Indiana, 310 E. Charles St., Muncie, IN 47305.

Recipients will be honored during a program, which will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, in the Muncie City Hall auditorium.

Women’s Equality Day celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Those being honored will be presented the Vivian V. Conley Recognition Award.

Conley, who died May 8, 1993,  was at the forefront of many community issues relating to education, civil rights and aging. She attended Ball State University in her 60s, earning her bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in gerontology.

Organizations that make up the coalition are the Friends of Conley, League of Women Voters of Muncie-Delaware County, American Association of University Women, The National Organization for Women, the Indiana Women of Achievement Awards Committee, YWCA Central Indiana and the Coalition of 100 Black Women.

“The Women’s Equality Program is important because it shines light on the contributions women make in society, politics, business, civic, and humanitarian efforts,” said WaTasha Barnes Griffin, chief executive officer of YWCA Central Indiana.

Additional event details and the honorees will be announced before the event.
