MUNCIE, IN—Muncie Quilt Guild has a project in its fifth year of providing individual quilted blankets for each preschool student of the Muncie Community schools.
The members of two sections of the quilt guild design and create 36” X 42” blankets for the students use during naptime of their school day. At the end of the school year the blankets go home with the student.
The blankets are given to provide warmth during a resting part of the day as well as add security and comfort to the 4-year-olds new experience of being in an environment away from their home. The various colored and designed items also add to the classroom setting.
Each year, 240 blankets are delivered for the first day of school to the 12 classrooms. Following is a statement by a preschool teacher about the project.
“I would like to take a moment to recognize and thank the wonderful ladies who generously donate handmade Quilts to the pre-K classrooms at Southview elementary. My name is Natasha Campbell and I teach three and four-year-olds. Our students enjoy a daily nap as part of their routine. On the first day of school, each child gets to choose a special child sized quilt to use throughout the school year. The colorful patterns and thoughtful craftsmanship make nap time even more comforting and exciting for our little learners.”
Campbell also said, “What makes these Quilts even more meaningful is that at the end of the school year or when a child leaves our program they get to take their quilt home as it keepsake. It becomes a lasting reminder of their first school experiences and the kindness of people in our community. The time, talent, and love that go into making each quilt are truly appreciated. Your generosity has brought comfort, joy and smiles do so many children over the years. On behalf of my classroom and the families we serve thank you for making such a meaningful difference in the lives of our students.”
Muncie Quilt Guild meets the last Wednesday of each month at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Moore Rd at 10:00 a.m. as well as an evening group on the third Thursday at 6:00 pm at Remedy Church on North Oakwood Ave. Guests and new members are always welcome.
