MUNCIE, IN—A group of high school students from the Muncie Youth Leadership Program is inviting the community to help shape the future of one of Muncie’s most symbolic landmarks: the Unity Bridge.
The students, working in collaboration with city officials and community partners, have launched a brief public survey to gather input on the bridge’s role, public awareness, and future initiatives. The project is part of their leadership development curriculum, which challenges students to engage in hands-on civic experiences.
“The Unity Bridge has the potential to bring people together and reflect the values of Muncie,” said Vivana Bhagat, a participant in the Muncie Youth Leadership Program. “This survey gives residents the chance to share their voices and help shape future community efforts.”
The bridge, located within the city of Muncie, stands as a symbol of unity, inclusivity, and community investment. Yet, many residents remain unaware of its significance. Through this project, students hope to elevate awareness, encourage engagement, and inspire new ways to celebrate the bridge’s message.
The five-minute survey is open to all Muncie residents and anyone with a connection to the community. Responses will help guide conversations with local leaders, artists, and officials about potential future uses and engagement opportunities related to the Unity Bridge.

About the Muncie Youth Leadership Program
The Muncie Youth Leadership Program is facilitated by Shafer Leadership Academy in partnership with the Ball State University Teachers College, Burris Laboratory School, Muncie Central High School, and the The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities. The program empowers high school students with leadership skills, civic engagement opportunities, and hands-on community projects.
