MUNCIE, IN—Out of an abundance of caution, the City of Muncie is temporarily closing the beach at Prairie Creek Reservoir due to elevated levels of microcystins, a toxin produced by blue-green algae. Recent testing revealed a level of 9.9, exceeding the EPA’s safe threshold of 8.
The closure will remain in effect until after treatment and testing indicate levels have returned to a safe range. Signs have been posted at the reservoir concerning the testing, and a warning is also being issued for individuals swimming off boats.
Microcystins can pose significant health risks to humans and animals, including skin rashes, liver damage, and more severe illnesses if ingested or inhaled in high concentrations. Algal blooms, often fueled by farm field runoff and high temperatures, are a natural occurrence that can escalate under certain conditions.
The City of Muncie is dedicated to the health and safety of its residents and visitors. To address this situation, Prairie Creek Reservoir will undergo an algae treatment starting Monday, June 30. Treatment will be conducted using Cutrine Plus®, a chemical that is EPA-registered and safe for fish, livestock, and recreational activities. Treatment will proceed only if dissolved oxygen levels in the water are suitable.
Prairie Creek Reservoir is one of the most thoroughly tested bodies of water in Indiana, with monitoring conducted by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Muncie Sanitary District Bureau of Water Quality, and other agencies. The City obtained all necessary permits, including an Aquatic Vegetation Control Permit from DNR and IDEM to perform algae control measures such as the treatment described above.
Other Indiana beaches are currently under alert or advisory status for blue-green algae in 2025, including Brookville Lake, Mill Lake and others. Because certain populations, such as children and those with compromised immune systems should avoid swimming while under advisory the City of Muncie is taking the proactive measure of closing temporarily to ensure public health at Prairie Creek Reservoir Beach.
The City will provide updates as water quality improves and the beach reopens. Visitors are encouraged to follow all posted advisories and avoid contact with visible algae in the water.
