Muncie, IN—Silver Birch of Muncie, located at 2500 West Kilgore, is now open for residents.
Silver Birch of Muncie is a new 55-and-over affordable assisted living residential community with a combined total of 119 studio and one bedroom apartments. Mellissa Carpenter is the administrator of Silver Birch of Muncie. She says affordable assisted living is a new concept for Muncie and Delaware County.
“Because Silver Birch of Muncie is considered to be an affordable assisted living community, there are two qualifiers,” she said. “For the tax credit portion, an individual resident must have a gross income of less than $2010 per month. Silver Birch residents must also qualify for a Medicaid waiver. (Life Stream Services handles the Medicaid waiver portion.) A Medicaid waiver determines whether or not an individual requires health related assistance. Once a residential prospect is approved by both processes, then the resident may move in. It usually takes a few weeks to obtain both approvals.”
Affordable assisted living is generally defined as housing that provides nursing care, housekeeping, and prepared meals as needed for low-income residents who qualify and who do not need to be placed in a nursing home. Assisted living residents are more independent and self-reliant, yet appreciate a bit of help with portions of their care.
Most assisted living centers are private pay. Silver Birch of Muncie allows lower income people the opportunity to live in an affordable assisted living environment. It’s an opportunity they’ve never had before. In the past, they’d have to live at home with limited help or go to a nursing home. Those were the only two choices. Silver Birch of Muncie gives those people a third option. According to Mellissa, “Silver Birch of Muncie is the only affordable assisted living facility in Delaware County. There are certainly other assisted living facilities in Muncie, but they are all private pay. That’s why Vermilion Development chose to build Silver Birch here…there’s no other similar type of facility in Delaware County.”
Everett Godsey has been a resident at Silver Birch since February 8, 2018. In fact, he was the very first resident to live at Silver Birch of Muncie. Everett enjoys watching television, so he was quick to point out how he had adjusted his bed so he had a clear view of his cable TV. In his spare time, Everett likes to collect arrowheads and make necklaces out of them.
“It’s beautiful. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. The staff are beautiful and take great care of me. I just wouldn’t want anything else. I love living here.”—Everett Godsey
