Muncie, IN—The Martin Luther King Dream Team, the Muncie Branch of NAACP, and Indiana Black Expo, Muncie Chapter Inc. awards scholarships to local students via the “I Have A Dream: Community Collaborative Scholarship.”

The “I Have A Dream: Community Collaborative Scholarship.” awards two scholarships each spring to deserving graduating Delaware County seniors (who plan to attend college, preferably, in Indiana) and whose high school activities reflect the ideals of Dr. King’s dream. Scholarships are awarded based on GPA, community service, and essay. The Selection Committee uses a rubric to score each candidate fairly.

The 2018 scholarship committee received fourteen applications from Burris Laboratory, Delta, Wapahani, and Muncie Central High school seniors. The two standouts, Joslyn Sloss and Kalyse Garrett, both Burris Laboratory students, were selected as the 2018 “I Have A Dream: Community Collaborative Scholarship” recipients.

Joslyn Sloss, a 2018 Burris Laboratory School graduate is currently attending the HBCU Tennessee State University (TSU) located in the heart of Nashville, TN. She is a student in the school of dentistry and plans to pursue a career in the dental field. Joslyn is the daughter of Dorica and Eric Watson, and Dion Sloss.

Kalyse Garrett, also a 2018 Burris Laboratory School graduate is currently attending Tennessee Wesleyan University located in Athens, TN. She is a student in the school of social work and plans to pursue a career in Social Services. Kalyse is the daughter of Krista and Doug Garrett.

The 2018 recipients each received $1000.00 to provide tuition assistance at the University of choice. Upon verification of enrollment and course schedule, the “I Have A Dream: Community Collaborative Scholarship Committee sends the funds directly to the University’s Registrar office.
