MUNCIE, IN. – Andrew Hacker and Chris Horner have been selected as Muncie Community Schools’ (MCS) primary and secondary Teachers of the Year, respectively, for the 2022-23 school year. MCS Director of Public Education and CEO Lee Ann Kwiatkowski presented each with his award during a staff welcome back event at Muncie Central High School.

Hacker is a Fine Arts teacher at North View elementary school who stands out for not only creating engaging lessons that students find relatable, but he also helps lead the district’s Community Sing event that draws thousands of people to the Muncie Fieldhouse in December. In addition, he serves as a mentor teacher to other educators throughout the district.

Horner teaches the Fire & Rescue and EMT programs at the Muncie Area Career Center (MACC), transforming the Fire & Rescue program from a one semester class into a year-long course and building the EMT program from scratch. He has established strong community partnerships and oversees the MACC’s CPR certification program, which results in most MACC students becoming certified.

Both Hacker and Horner will receive plaques and $1,000 salary increases for their district awards, which is in addition to the $1,000 increases they received for being their schools’ respective teachers of the year. The other school honorees included:

·         Donna Cunningham – Longfellow Elementary

·         Melinda Sheffield – Grissom Elementary

·         Angela Bryan – West View Elementary

·         Haley Maupin – South View Elementary

·         Courtney Miles – East Washington Academy

·         Tiffany Turner – Northside Middle School

·         Jensen Matchett – Southside Middle School

·         Allen Kidd – Central High School

“It’s difficult to select just two from such a great group of educators, but Mr. Hacker and Mr. Horner are wonderful examples of teachers who not only do a great job in the classroom, but also continue to look for new, unique ways to engage students,” MCS Director of Public Education and CEO Lee Ann Kwiatkowski said.
