MUNCIE, IN—Ball State University and the City of Muncie have partnered to create a new neighborhood park for Muncie’s Anthony-Northside Neighborhood, advancing a shared commitment to fostering positive community impact.
Through a recently signed license agreement, Ball State has granted the City of Muncie the use of land surrounding the University’s Oakwood Building—formerly the Anthony Administration Building of Muncie Community Schools—for the development of the new public space. The park will provide a much-needed recreational resource for Anthony-Northside Neighborhood families and residents, fulfilling a longtime community priority.
“The project is an extension of our mission to serve our friends and neighbors in the communities we call home,” said Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns. “We are grateful to partner once again with the City of Muncie and to support the Anthony-Northside Neighborhood’s vision for a park for all people to enjoy.”
Ball State purchased the former Anthony Administration Building and the surrounding 10 acres of land from Muncie Community Schools in 2016. The facility, now known as the Oakwood Building, houses the University’s Office of Community Engagement, Office of Immersive Learning, and Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute, further strengthening Ball State’s ties to the Muncie community.
“We appreciate Ball State’s continued collaboration and generosity,” said Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour. “This new park will be a great asset for the Anthony-Northside Neighborhood and for families across our city.”
Under the terms of the agreement, the City of Muncie will oversee the development and maintenance of the park. Planning and design efforts will continue in coordination with neighborhood stakeholders to ensure the space meets community needs. The date of the park’s official opening is yet to be determined.
