MUNCIE, IN—The American Kitefliers Association will be holding its annual convention in Muncie, October 12 – 17.  We’ll be involved in activities at the Horizon Convention Center and are delighted to be offered the use of the flying fields at the Academy of Model Aeronautics.  About 150 of AKA’s members are expected to attend. The public is invited to attend some of our very special events:

At the Convention Center, our Kite Art Gallery opens Thursday night October 14 at 7 p.m. and our great Kite Auction opens at 8 p.m. on Friday the 15th.  Both are indicative of the great art, joy, and color of modern kites.

At the AMA fields, we will have mass ascensions of different kinds of kites from Tuesday through Saturday at 1 p.m. (Weather permitting.)

These are showcases of different artistic approaches to specific kinds of kites. A Kitemakers’ Competition will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday . (Again, if the weather cooperates.)

Fighter kite and Rokkaku kite battles will take place on multiple days including Saturday. Hands on Learn to Fly lessons will take place Tuesday through Friday afternoons with the Rokkaku kites— large Japanese battle kites. There will be displays of multi-line sport kite flying, both indoors and outdoors. Kite displays will take place every afternoon.

In good weather, these activities are an absolute delight to artists, photographers, and children of all ages.  Our association would be delighted to have members of the public join us for our celebration of the new world of kites.
