MUNCIE, IN—When Ryan and Ashley Hunter signed up for their first adventure race in 2021, they were simply looking for a new way to spend time together outdoors. What they discovered was much more than a hobby.
Since then, adventure racing has challenged them physically, strengthened their problem-solving skills, deepened their appreciation for nature, and even helped them grow as a couple. Their four children have also joined them in events in Indianapolis. Now, they’re hoping to share that experience with the Muncie community through the inaugural Reservoir Ramble, taking place Sept. 20 at Prairie Creek Reservoir.
Despite the sport’s growing popularity nationwide, the Hunters have found that many people have never heard of adventure racing.
“People usually compare it to a scavenger hunt,” Ashley Hunter said. “Using only a map and compass, teams search for checkpoints which are orange and white flags scattered throughout the course. Most races include three disciplines—trekking, mountain biking, and paddling—and the team that collects the most points in the allotted time wins.”

“People think they have to be incredibly fit to participate, but that’s really not the case,” he said. “Adventure racing is all about choosing your own challenge. There are no preset distances, so teams decide how much they want to take on. You can push yourself as hard as you want or simply enjoy a day outside and still call yourself an adventure racer.”
The Hunters designed the Reservoir Ramble with first-time racers and families in mind. The event will run from 1–5 p.m. at Prairie Creek Reservoir and emphasizes fun and exploration over competition. Teams of one to four people will navigate the course. Because they recognize that not everyone is comfortable on a bike, the cycling portion will be optional. Canoe and kayak rentals are included with registration.
“We really want this to be accessible,” Ashley said. “Our goal is to introduce people to adventure racing while showcasing one of Muncie’s best outdoor spaces.”
The Hunters hope families, friends, coworkers, and experienced racers alike will form teams, explore the reservoir, and discover a different kind of race—one that rewards teamwork, navigation, and curiosity as much as speed.
Registration is now open. To encourage younger adventurers, participants under 18 may race free with a registered team.
