John Carlson: Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Food

By John Carlson— What is it about fiery food that makes some of us consider eating it a personal challenge? Moronity? OK, I’ll buy that. Beats me how many times I’ve entered restaurants anticipating a pleasant, filling but ultimately dull meal. Then something on the menu strikes me like a duelist’s slap across the face, daring me to try it unless I’m some kind of little wussy boy. Then, despite being some kind of little wussy boy, I do try it. The first time I remember succumbing to this self-imposed pressure was while packed around a table filled with family members…

Northwest Bank Dedicates Children’s Library to Honor Pat Botts

By Colette Bonavita— Muncie, IN—In August, the family of Pat Botts, along with representatives of Northwest Bank and Muncie By5, dedicated the Pat Botts Free Children’s Library. We invite families in the Muncie community to visit the library, located in Northwest’s 110 E. Charles St. office, and “take a book, leave a book”. Pat, former MutualBank president and COO, passed away unexpectedly in October 2019, leaving a legacy of servant leadership and concern for the youth in the Muncie area. He was a founding member of Muncie BY5, an organization dedicated to early child development and education, so it made sense to honor Pat with…

Ivy Tech Community College Offers Flexibility, Affordability and Ability to Maintain Balance

By Jennifer Gasiorek— Muncie, IN—The year 2020 has forced people to change their routines.  This pandemic has caused layoffs, shutdowns, business closures, school closings and illnesses leaving many people to pose the question: “what do I do now?” For Breana McIntosh that question was answered: go back to school and get a degree. The challenges she faced to get there were tough and the roadblocks many. She was determined and did not give up. When Breana graduated high school, she decided to go straight to Ivy Tech Community College. She had no idea what she wanted a degree in or…

Key Partners to Combine Forces for Virtual Community Political Candidate Forum Series

By Aimee West, Community Candidate Forum Series Committee— Muncie, IN—Times are hard; the electoral politics of 2020 are confusing; but staying connected to leadership and the issues which impact you the most in our community does not have to be. While our country is experiencing challenges and divisions we have never before faced as a nation, we have an opportunity to come together as a community to learn about the leaders asking for your vote in November. COVID-19 continues to be a barrier for citizens to safely convene and candidates to campaign, which is why key partners have combined forces to materialize the Community Candidate Forum Series, a series of virtual forums which will serve as the sole opportunity for…

John Carlson: Hedging Your Bet On Shrubs

By John Carlson— Countless people admire stately shrubbery sculpted to within an inch of its life, but not me. I am more into what you might call “impressionistic” shrub sculpting. This was not an artistic passion purposely pursued. Rather, the realization struck one day after gazing at the shrubs ringing our little circular driveway and noting they were what the uninformed might call “crappy looking.” In my defense, I had never owned shrubs lining a circular driveway before we bought this place. The very idea of shrubs lining a circular driveway seemed foreign to me, unnecessary. Therefore, they took a…
