U.S. Department of Education grants final approval, capping a seven-year effort and formalizing Ross’s commitment to affordable, career-focused healthcare education

MUNCIE, IN — Ross Education, which has trained healthcare professionals for more than 50 years, has announced that it has completed its conversion to a not-for-profit institution. On July 28, 2026, the U.S. Department of Education granted the final approval required, formally recognizing Ross as a nonprofit institution for federal student aid purposes.
The Department’s approval concludes a process Ross began in 2019. Ross’s corporate parent converted to a Michigan nonprofit corporation in February 2021 and is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) public charity. The conversion has already been approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Ross’s institutional and programmatic accreditors, and higher education regulators in all eight states where the organization operates its Ross College and Ross Medical Education Center campuses.
“This is a new chapter in Ross’s 50-plus-year history,” said George Grayeb, Chairman, President & CEO of Ross Education. “Our resources are now fully aligned with our long-term goals: career-focused programs, affordable tuition, and reducing our students’ reliance on debt. This transition is only meaningful if we live it every day — and that is exactly what we intend to do for our students, faculty, and staff.”
What the change means for students
Ross has held tuition essentially flat since beginning the conversion process in 2019 and intends to maintain that commitment. Nonprofit status also expands sources of financial support available to students: Ross can now pursue institutional grants, and students in some states gain access to new or expanded state grant funding — further reducing reliance on student loans.
Reinvesting in programs and long-term stability
As a not-for-profit, Ross reinvests all resources in its educational mission. Near-term priorities include modernizing programs across the institution — with focused investment in Ross’s two largest programs, Medical Assistant and Nursing — and strengthening institutional reserves so that Ross can weather future challenges without passing costs on to students.
“Our students come to Ross to pursue a career, and they should be able to do that without taking on debt that follows them for decades,” said George Grayeb. “Stable, low tuition isn’t a slogan for us. It’s the commitment this conversion was built to protect.”
