MUNCIE, IN—The 2026 Delaware County Special Needs Prom transformed the Horizon Convention Center into a celebration of joy, inclusion, and community Saturday, May 16, as nearly 1,200 attendees came together for one of the region’s most impactful annual events.
The evening welcomed individuals with special needs, families, caregivers, volunteers, educators, advocates, and community supporters from throughout East Central Indiana for a prom experience designed to ensure every guest felt celebrated, valued, and included. Guests enjoyed an evening filled with music, dancing, formal wear, entertainment, and countless moments of connection and celebration.
Before the prom began, more than 40 community leaders, donors, sponsors, and advocates gathered for the exclusive pre-prom reception, “A Suite Experience – The Spotlight on Special Needs Prom.” Held in a private suite overlooking the festivities, the event provided attendees with a firsthand look at the impact of the prom while also outlining the organization’s future vision for expanded year-round programming.
Community leaders in attendance included Mayor Dan Ridenour, Jim Williams, Chair of the Muncie Community Schools Board, and Chris Capko, new Ball State men’s basketball coach, along with business leaders, nonprofit supporters, educators, and elected officials from across the community.
Throughout the pre-prom event, attendees heard emotional and inspiring remarks from prom participants, volunteers, founders, and supporters who shared stories about the life-changing impact the organization has had on individuals and families throughout the region.
Organizers also unveiled updates to the nonprofit’s growing initiative, “A Year of Belonging,” which will expand programming beyond prom night to create year-round opportunities for connection, celebration, and inclusion for individuals with special needs and their families.
“This night is about so much more than a dance,” said Lynne Fullhart Hatfield, Co-Founder of Special Needs Prom. “It’s about creating a place where every person is seen, celebrated, and embraced exactly as they are. Watching nearly 1,200 people come together in joy and acceptance is a reminder of what is possible when a community chooses belonging.”
Hatfield also emphasized the growing momentum behind the organization’s broader mission and the importance of community collaboration moving forward.
“We are seeing incredible support from across Delaware County,” Hatfield said. “The leaders, sponsors, volunteers, and families who gathered for ‘A Suite Experience’ believe in building a stronger, more inclusive community. ‘A Year of Belonging’ is our commitment to ensuring these individuals and families continue to have meaningful opportunities for connection throughout the entire year.”
As part of the organization’s continued growth, Special Needs Prom announced it is actively seeking additional members for its Board of Directors to help guide the next phase of expansion and outreach. Four individuals in attendance at the pre-prom event volunteered for Board service.
The Delaware County Special Needs Prom continues to be made possible through the generosity of local businesses, community organizations, volunteers, donors, and sponsors committed to making inclusion a priority throughout the region.
