Financing homes and home improvement projects are undergoing an evolution. I’ve been in the banking industry for thirteen years, and in that time, home buying has drastically changed. Ah, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s go back to 2007.
I was a young, vibrant, 23-year-old who was looking to buy her first home. (Yes, I’m a millennial. Don’t write me off just yet.) I was a newlywed, just married for two years and my husband and I decided it was time to move on from the apartment life. Naturally, by working at the bank, I asked a coworker, so how does one start the process to buy a home? After pointing me in the direction of Jama Jacobs, the floodgates opened.
What is my credit? What is my husband’s credit? Is that good? How much can we afford? What would our payment be? What happens if something breaks? Do I have to read all this paperwork?
I don’t have enough space to walk you through the hundreds of questions I had not knowing what I was doing and never having this kind of experience before. After all, we weren’t talking about a $500 vacuum or even a $5,000 air conditioner. We were talking thousands, upon thousands of dollars. That was overwhelming and a lot of responsibility. But that’s what I wanted, right? Responsibility, a home, and to be an adult.
I think many of us could relate. Maybe for you, it was your first car, or like me, your first home. Regardless, you’ve probably had a similar overwhelming moment making such a large purchase.
I’ve learned, it doesn’t have to be as overwhelming as it seems. If you talk to a mortgage lender, they’ll probably tell you some home loans are easy and run smoothly with no hiccups. Often, though, there are hiccups. Just like no two people are the same, each home loan can create its own set of hiccups. What matters most is who you can call or meet with when those hiccups arise.
It is a lot less overwhelming when you have a real person you talk to, face to face, to discuss your circumstances and to get your questions answered. Yes, I am a millennial saying that I value the face to face interaction, especially when it’s something unknown and intimidating to me.
At MutualBank, we don’t make you the mortgage/home buying expert. You don’t have to know all of the answers or even all of the questions. We are here to walk you through this exciting opportunity. The best part about banking with Mutual, you get the conveniences of online with a real person, right here in Muncie, ready to talk with you and support you through your home buying experience. Take it from me, or don’t. Try it for yourself. Apply with Mutual for your next home buying and home improvement project!
