MUNCIE, Ind. – Climb every mountain. Ford every stream. Follow every rainbow ‘til you find…Muncie Civic Theatre’s production of “The Sound of Music.”

Muncie Civic Theatre will kick off its 2021-22 Mainstage season with the classic family-friendly musical, opening Aug. 20 and running through Sept. 5. Shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m.

One of the most beloved musicals of all time, “The Sound of Music” tells the story of a spirited young governess in Austria in 1938 who brings music and joy back to a broken family, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis gain power.

Michael O’Hara, Associate Dean in the College of Fine Arts at Ball State University and veteran director at Muncie Civic Theatre, said he took on this popular production because “the need to show hope and love overcoming fear and hate seems especially appropriate” today.

“We can all use more music and love in our lives at the moment.”

He has much love for his cast, which O’Hara said is “a great mix of newbies, veterans, and several families.” “Music Man” alums Connor Angel and Loralee Songer will play the Captain and Mother Superior, respectively, and newcomer Maddy Cantwell will play Maria, he noted.

“There are six different parent/child members of the cast and crew, and the seven von Trapp kids are simply adorable and amazing singers,” he added.

O’Hara said the cast and crew has taken as many pandemic precautions as possible during rehearsals. “But as with everyone else, we’re dependent on the actions of others (wearing masks, getting vaccinated, etc.,), and hope that our community members will all do what’s best for one another,” he said.

And audiences, he said, will hopefully walk away with a powerful, uplifting message during these uncertain times.

“That we all have the capacity to love, to hope, and to greet each morning with happiness and energy, even when things seem their darkest,” he said.
