MUNCIE, IN– Muncie Central Social Studies teacher Kate Hughes has been honored with the Ball Brothers Foundation’s Excellence in Teaching Award, given annually to one Delaware County classroom teacher who motivates students through critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and collaboration. The award recipient is also recognized for displaying integrity, responsibility to their community and a willingness to go the extra mile for students while inspiring students and colleagues alike.

“Kate’s ability to engage her students in unique experiential learning convinced us that she is a great representative of the fine teachers of Delaware County,” Ball Brothers Foundation President & CEO Jud Fisher said. “Teaching intentionally creates authentic learning and motivates students, and these are the things that drew us to choose Kate for the award.”

Hughes, Muncie Community Schools’ Teacher of the Year last year, was overwhelmed with emotion upon hearing the news.

“I was not expecting this,” she said. “I’m so grateful to the Ball Brothers Foundation and all my wonderful colleagues in our department at Muncie Central. I also need to thank my students – they’re just amazing.”

Hughes, who is also Central’s volleyball head coach, will receive $5,000 for her classroom and another $2,500 to use toward professional development. In addition, MCS and Muncie Central High School will each receive $5,000 to support creativity and innovation efforts.

Hughes becomes the third MCS teacher in the last four years to win the Excellence in Teaching Award following Chris Horner (Muncie Area Career Center) in 2024 and Kira Zick (West View Elementary) in 2023.
