By Jeff Howe—
MUNCIE, IN—I am pleased to provide an update regarding Tuhey Pool and its operations for the current season.
Earlier this year, the City was notified that the YMCA would no longer be operating Tuhey Pool. Following that notification, City officials conducted a review of the facility and discovered significant infrastructure and equipment issues. Based on those findings, the Parks Director estimated that the repairs needed to restore safe and reliable operations would exceed $1 million, leading the Administration to believe the pool would likely remain closed for the season.
Despite those challenges, the determination, collaboration, and hard work of employees across multiple departments made it possible to open the pool and provide this important recreational opportunity for local families. This outcome reflects a significant team effort and demonstrates the City’s commitment to serving the community.
Several departments played critical roles in making the opening possible. The Muncie Sanitary District, Department of Public Works, Special Projects Coordinator and the City Engineer dedicated considerable time and expertise to addressing equipment issues and implementing repairs necessary to achieve safe and functional operations. Their contributions extended beyond these efforts, but it was their work on the pool’s systems that ultimately enabled the facility to open.
Once it became clear that operations could proceed, the Human Resources Department successfully recruited a qualified manager and lifeguards to staff the facility, while the Muncie Police Department promptly coordinated security arrangements to support a safe environment for patrons and staff.
While the pool is open and operating, challenges remain. Aging equipment continues to require ongoing attention, and our department partners regularly monitor and address operational issues as they arise. Additional pump and valve repairs are anticipated, and we expect to continue managing equipment-related challenges until those improvements are completed.
I would also like to recognize the members of the Parks and Recreation Board, Shannon Powers and Brad Marshall, along with the city’s legal representation from Beasley & Gilkison, who have generously shared their knowledge, experience, and expertise throughout this process. Their assistance has been valuable as we have worked through operational and maintenance challenges.
