MUNCIE, IN—Ball State University graduate and community engagement professional Suzanne Clem has been named executive director of the 8twelve Coalition, a resident-led neighborhood revitalization alliance in South Muncie.

Clem, whose work spans 20 years in fundraising, marketing, health care, and executive leadership, assumed her new role on July 1. She replaces interim executive director Patrick Smith, who stepped in more than a year ago during a transition period for the organization.

Originally, the 8twelve Coalition emerged as an initiative of Greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity to become a more intentional partner in revitalizing whole neighborhoods, expanding its impact beyond individual housing projects.” Dedicated to supporting Muncie’s Thomas Park/Avondale and South Central neighborhoods, the coalition brings together more than two dozen organizations to improve housing, strengthen businesses and build partnerships. Since 2015, pocket parks, improved sidewalks, community gardens and small businesses have taken root.

“We’re thrilled to welcome an experienced leader to this position,” said James Heimlich, president of the 8twelve Governance Council. “Suzanne has long been involved in our community and, in particular, in South Muncie.”

Previously, Clem was vice president for community engagement for Open Door Health Services where her role included oversight of the then-executive director of 8twelve Coalition. In 2022, the 8twelve Coalition transitioned out of Muncie Habitat for Humanity into an administrative partnership with Open Door Health Services.

In her professional work, Clem helped create and launch multiple health and social support initiatives that have a strong presence in South Muncie. She has served as a leader within George and Frances Ball Foundation’s Cradle to Career initiative and as a consultant for Medicaid health plan programs.

In 2024, she was named recipient of the ATHENA Leadership Award from Women in Business Unlimited and in 2022 received Vivian Conely award for distinction in public health leadership.

Clem serves on the Board of Directors for Urban Light Community Development Corporation, is an active volunteer for Greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity and is an engaged member of Avondale United Methodist Church.

“The 8twelve Coalition puts resident voices at the center of its work, and I’m excited to jump in and support that good work being done alongside neighbors and partners,” Clem said about her appointment.
